Settings goals is a must. The start of a new year (and a new decade!) is a great excuse to set some for the next 12 months.

*Apologies, this was meant to be posted at the start of January – hopefully it will help those who are still yet to set goals in 2020.*

Set SMART Goals

You probably already know what this means, but it’s worth reinforcing it as it is one of the best and easiest way to set goals.

S – Specific

M – Measurable

A – Achievable

R – Realistic

T – Timely

It also helps if you break annual goals down into monthly goals, and then again into weekly goals. You can even set daily ones, but that’s a bit too much for me!

See more on SMART goals here.

An Example

Using property as an example, let’s look at two goals:

1. I want to get on the property ladder.

2. I want to buy my first property, for around £250k, in Manchester, by the end of October 2020.

Obviously, it’s easy to see that the second goal is superior to the first.

It is specific, with the location and amount stated. Measurable as if you haven’t completed this by the end of October then you haven’t reached the goal. Assuming there are still properties selling (which there are) its achievable, and realistic assuming you have a good enough deposit and salary to borrow the required sum. There is also a time element as it is by the end of October 2020.
